Shaffers Crossing – Jefferson County, CO
Scope: This technically demanding project saw the complete reconstruction of the intersection of Highway 285 and Elk Creek Road. It includes the construction of a bridge over Elk Creek Road, an arch plate wildlife crossing under 285. 80,000 yards of technical controlled blasting on the project was done by HEI Civil blasters to create a 105 foot high wall. Material for the backfill of the MSE walls was produced on site from material blasted. It also includes the construction of MES walls and accel/edcel lanes to accommodate the new configuration. There were significant environmental issues in the protection of the water quality in Elk Creek and wetland mitigation. An ARRA funded project under the auspices of CDOT, was completed in June of 2011.
